The Nose Knows

For years now I’ve been told I have mild sleep apnea.  Next week I’ll get the results of my third sleep study at which, I am predicting, they will suggest that I get a C-PAP machine.  That’s the Darth Vader mask that’s attached to a machine with a water reservoir and a steady stream of air to keep your throat open.  It has given new life to both my brother and one of my brothers-in-law plus many other people I know.

But I don’t want to do it!  I really, really don’t.  And now I have a reason not to.  You see, I snore.  Loudly and often.  So much so that lately I have been waking my husband and occasionally myself!  Now, it’s apparently not buzzsaw-loud but it’s erratic in nature and that’s enough to prevent a good night’s sleep.  This would not do.  So after doing a bit of research I went to the drug store and $15 later I owned this:

small, clear, flexible clamp in a blue case

That my friends is a Silent Snooz.  It is a flexible little clamp that goes up your nose and after a few seconds you don’t even feel it.  And it has given me and my betrothed 3 consecutive nights of restful sleep.  It’s a little miracle in a cup!

I’m looking forward to the reaction of my sleep doctor next week when I turn down the offer to buy a $1500 machine because a $15 over-the-counter gizmo is doing the trick.  I’m not waking up at night.  I’m not crashing through the day like a meth head in need of a fix.  I imagine I’m feeling like a normal person feels.  Waking up is a little foggier than it used to be because I have actually been asleep!   I’ll have to buy a new Silent Snooz every month or so and my reaction to that is, “so what?”  Better a small, silent clamp on my honker than a machine that takes up the entire night stand.  I’m so happy I could … sleep!

  1. How do you always manage to find the neat little gizmos? Remind me in the spring that I need to go on a shopping excursion with you again… even if it’s to a drug store!

Glad to hear you’re finally getting some decent sleep. 🙂

  2. Hi Lisa,
    Enjoy your blog.
I’m keenly interested in this, as I also have sleep apnea. I’ve been resisting the CPAP machine.
Is this available in Canadian drug stores? I’ve never heard of it. How does it compare to Breathe Right strips?
    Thanks for mentioning this.

    1. My pleasure. Now the thing is, it says right on it that it doesn’t claim to work on sleep apnea. I’m sure they have to say that because it’s such a serious condition. So I don’t want to say for sure that that’s what it does. I am not a doctor! All I know is I am sleeping through the night more often than not now and so is my husband. It goes in the nose as opposed to the strips that go over the outside. It’s at Shoppers Drug Marts here right beside the Breathe Right strips. I have my latest sleep test follow-up today and I’m expecting to hear from the Doctor that the gizmo is a whole lot of BS but I will report on it later! Thanks for reading and for commenting. 🙂

  3. Thanks for the response. I’ll check back for your follow up, and I’ll check out my local Shoppers. At this price, it’s worth a try. Thanks again for the tip.
