Going Out With a Whimper

I’ll admit it, I used to love Zellers in the GTA.  They were updated and clean and had great deals on everyday stuff like cleaning products.  A couple of them even had restaurants that served cheap weekend breakfasts with a smile.   Zellers here is a much different story.  The stores have long been neglected.  They remind me of K-Mart when I was a kid.  The one at Masonville Place is like stepping back in time to the 1970’s; stuffed with merchandise that seems disorganized and tired-looking.

And now they’re not even trying!  Since Walmart and Target agreed to take over the Zellers locations it seems as if they have simply given up.  Oh that’s not true, of course.  They’re doing social networking and having “fans” vote on which deals of the week will be offered.  But they only have about a year left before they’re swallowed up so I suppose it’s not too surprising that they’d begin to thin out the merchandise.  It’s not noticeable to the average eye, I’m sure, but this is what I noticed on Sunday.  I rolled up for an extremely rare visit to find that the new Sunday hours were posted on the door.  “Noon to 5”.   Walmart opens at 7.   Canadian Tire opens at 9:30.  I rest my case.
