Insurance Saga, Part III

And it’s good news!

Somewhere between driving home last Thursday and yesterday morning the man who hit my Xtrail with his Sebring had a change of heart and decided I did have the right of way.  He took 100% responsibility for the parking lot crash which means I get premium service without spending a dime. And that’s exactly how it should be.

Something I’ve discovered a lot of people don’t realize, and I certainly didn’t, is that his insurance doesn’t pay out – mine does.  That’s what “no fault” means.  There is fault in the crash itself but the other person’s insurance company doesn’t take the hit.  Your own does.  After all, that’s what insurance is for.  This prevents the innocent party from having to chase, and perhaps litigate, the other person’s insurer.  So the Sebring owner will have to pay a higher premium because he’s a bigger liability to his company and I will have everything paid for and my deductible waived and not get nicked with higher insurance.

And all is right with the world. I picked up my rental car yesterday one year to the day that I last picked up a rental car!  It’s a white Toyota Corolla that smells like wet dog.

I have to say, the relief I felt knowing I wouldn’t have a fight on my hands and that he was doing the right thing, was as close to elation as I can remember coming!  I danced.  I really did. And when I thought about it again later, I danced again. Now my Xtrail is in the shop (the same shop that fixed it a year ago) and I can carry on not feeling like I was driven over a second time.
