Things I’ve Learned This Week (So Far)

I can shut down the quickie-lube guys with one confidently told lie:

“My husband’s a mechanic”.  It brings the upsell attempts to a sudden, screeching halt!  Otherwise it’s an uncomfortable 20 minutes fending off explanations of why I need an $80 flush of the whatsit and a check of the doohickey fluid for another $50.

A lot of women my age are still into real rock. On location at the Western Fair and out every day for the Big Show Tailgate parties at various businesses, I’ve been thrilled to meet so many women in their 30s to 50s who love Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Pink Floyd and the other bands whose music moves me. They also happen to be the core of the playlist of 98.1 Free-FM.

You can’t really create your own brand.  I learned this from the Voice-Over Garden. You are not in charge of what people say about you and how you are perceived. That’s really up to the market.  You can only control what you can control. Your fancy logo and pretty ads will only take you so far.  So all of those little things you do every day are what really matter. Sweat the small stuff because it’s big stuff that affects your rep!

  1. You may not be able to create your own brand, but you can influence it. The single greatest mistake individuals and companies make in their marketing, is the lack of consistency across all platforms. If your inconsistent, and send multiple messages, you create confusion in the minds of your clients and when confused, clients simply avoid your services/business.
