Unexpected Direction

You have to be from Mars to have escaped hearing about a boy group called One Direction.  They’re the biggest thing since whoever was the biggest thing since the Backstreet Boys.

These young Brits (two are Irish) have racked up scads of hits since they finished third on Britain’s The X-Factor in 2010. Teen girls go loopy for them. Some teen boys likely do too. So when they were the musical guest on SNL last weekend I thought, hey, lets give these kids a chance. And they were great.

They’ve got a Mumford & Sons vibe going and they can actually sing.  Catchy pop is catchy pop and it’s what I was raised on. I shouldn’t be surprised. After all, I did purchase the Backstreet Boys’ Greatest Hits and played it without shame. Classic rock is my musical home but hooky pop tunes are my vacation spot. I’m late to the party but I’m not exactly the target market.  Here’s The Story of My Life. (At least let it build to the first chorus before you bail on it – that means you, Kevin!)

  1. Well, on a positive note one of them seems to be very skilled at photographic processing……………..and I can only assume the others helped by taping all those photos way up high on the walls and that ain’t easy…….I guess.

  2. You don’t have to be from Mars, merely have interests elsewhere not to have heard about One Direction, for I haven’t, not my cup of tea.

    1. I’m willing to bet that you’ve had the radio on a news station and there’s been a mention of One Direction. It’s inescapable! But your ears would tune it out. As mine always did.
