Proper Peepers

I believe you get what you pay for but I also believe that some sectors and companies suck us dry because we don’t know any better.

An example would be my hearing aids.  I refused to accept the word of a big company’s estimate and went looking for a locally owned chain and paid half the price for double the gizmos.

I had my eyes checked last week and once again went through the process of pricing out progressive lenses.  They’ve become more important now that taking glasses off and putting them back on jostles the hearing aids and makes a crackling noise in the microphones. Progressives allow someone like me, with perfect distance vision, to see through the top of the lens because it’s clear, and then have progressively stronger lenses to allow for computer work and for reading.

And boy howdy are they expensive! When I worked for Rogers, I could buy these items at the top of the food chain and have them covered by insurance.  I still have pretty darn good medical coverage but when it comes to glasses, hearing aids and the like the coverage is, shall we say, modest. We’re talking fractions.

So imagine my delight when I happened upon a pal’s Facebook request for information about an online glasses store called Zenni. Reviews were good so I checked it out.  The rules about eye exams have changed and your doctor is required to give you your prescription. When I got mine last week I popped onto Zenni, picked out some frames and placed an order for $90 delivered. They arrived yesterday from Mississauga.  What do you think?

Me in the mirror wearing rectangular black-rimmed glasses with red arms.

This photo also doubles as my no-makeup selfie that’s going around social media!

Anyway, you can’t see the red arms. They have no-glare, anti-scratch lenses.  Will they stand up to a designer frame? I don’t know yet. They feel substantial and the lens is definitely accurate to my prescription. How do they do it? I don’t know – volume?  But it’s a $100 gamble I’m willing to make and if I like these, at that price, I can afford to get a pair for every occasion.

  1. Great looking glasses! Are they progressive, then? Because at our optometrist’s, they make a little mark where your pupil is when you’re reading, etc. – I’m wondering how Zenni would deal with that, given how touchy glasses and that special delineation works when it comes to bifocals? Is there a guarantee you’ll be happy with them? A lot of questions!

    1. Yes, yes and yes. They are progressive but I am finding that I can’t see the computer with them so something is off. I called Zenni this morning and I didn’t have my order number with me but the girl said “We will make this right!” So we shall see.
