Losing Dad
Our family is going through a personal, painful reality that so many have experienced: a beloved family member has dementia. My Dad now lives in two realities. The one we share, and one all his own.

All Canadians know about the 1972 Canada-Russia hockey series in which the NHL proved its supremacy via Paul Henderson’s last minute goal. In 1974, the upstart WHA took on the Russians with a different outcome. The World Hockey Association was attempting to prove it was as good as the National Hockey League and better than the Russians. It had some of the great players but it didn’t have the preparation time that the NHL had enjoyed two years earlier. …

My head is full of details about news stories past and present. We all suffer from information overload but I think it’s different when that info is about your passion, say, competitive quilting. When it concerns the heinous and horrible things people do, it’s not as easy to store. …

Oh, the treasures I’ve found while going through my grandparents’ stuff that was tucked away for more than three decades. They kept every wedding invitation they ever received, letters from the 1920s and 30s and so much more that must have seemed important at the time. But there were a couple of photos that had me vexed. I had to get in touch with second and third cousins in order to find someone who knew who was in them. …

The title of today’s post is the theme for this day, International Women’s Day 2017. Sometimes special, designated days like this one seem to miss their connection to the common person, in this case, women. It feels as if we’re being asked to make a giant personal sacrifice, start a movement, take up arms – figuratively – while we’re busy living our lives and doing our best. For every Norma Rae, there are thousands of other women who recognized that Norma was onto something when she pushed for a union to get better wages and working conditions in their sweatshop of a textile plant. Their actions mattered too. Sometimes it’s the little things like setting a good example, that best exemplify who we are as women. …

Only one thing could get me to go to LEGOLAND at the massive Vaughan Mills shopping centre on a Saturday. He’s short, adorable, and the son of my Little Sister. And he happened to watch Lego Batman about eleven times last week. …

Today is a day off for most. Even most radio stations, which are federally regulated, are observing the provincial holiday. Mine is not and I drew the short straw so I’ll host the morning show alone today. That’s okay. It all eventually evens out in the end. Â …

It seems like everyone we know is retiring! That’s an exaggeration. But we know a lot of people who are finished with their daily-grind working lives. And I’m not too proud to say that I’m envious. …

I’m pretty sure I’ve never written a mushy Valentine’s Day post. And I’m not about to start! But today is the most wonderful of all fake holidays. Chocolate will be eaten. Hallmark will get richer. Single people will grumble or ignore the day, and rightly so. One day someone will sue Lindt because their heart-shaped boxes are exclusionary, or they feel shamed by the “couple’s special” at their favourite restaurant. (I’ll bet it happens!)Â …
We are binging on all seven seasons of Gilmore Girls. When the four-part series revival came out last year, I was intrigued, mainly because my friend Lianne is such a huge fan of the show. It’s to the point that she couldn’t bring herself to watch Bad Santa because Gilmore Girls star Lauren Graham plays a sexy bartender, nothing like young mom Lorelai Gilmore. …
I recently wrote about the major closet/drawer/shelf purges I’m going through in my home. Everything except my husband and the cats is up for reconsideration. My anti-clutter-freakness is now turned up to 11. …

A book about reducing the amount of stuff in the home has spun my head around on its axis. Me, the anti-clutter nut of all nuts. If I were a Friends character, I’d be fastidious Monica. Still, this book changed my view of stuff and clutter forever. …
