Books In My DNA

It’s a challenge to lure people away from their habits. If you’re in the habit of logging what you read and writing reviews on Goodreads, for example, it’s not going to be easy to get you to leave.

I have a big catalogue of books I’ve read and reviewed on Goodreads. My list is 359 volumes deep. I tend to write at least a couple of sentences in a book review in addition to leaving a star rating out of five. That effort is difficult to abandon.

However, E-readers came along and let us take our entire libraries with us. They didn’t diminish the popularity of real books but they gave us options. Established habits can be disrupted when the new thing is good enough.

Here Comes the Book-Lovers Disruptor

Book DNA is growing and creating a real rival to Goodreads. (They used to be called Shepherd. I first wrote about them HERE.) They’re also doing more for authors than Goodreads will –without spending money. A book promo via Kobo, Amazon, or Goodreads, including a giveaway, has been purchased. Those tools are simply out of reach for most indie authors.

When Little Voices came out in June, Book DNA contacted me about it. (One of the rare legitimate reach-outs about my books!) But they don’t just take, they give. In fact, they asked me to write a five-book recommendation for other books I consider to be in the same lane.

I get to promote my book, sure, but I also provide information about books I love. All over Book DNA are well-written blurbs about books, not written by paid promoters, but by real people. The small team behind this venture is really great. I’d love to see them become a massive success, mostly because they’re doing it for the right reasons. They love books, authors, and book lovers, and they want to be part of our reading life. And note that there is a paid supporter option but it’s not necessary at all. Sign-up is free and they will even send weekly recommendations in various types of books. And you don’t have to leave Goodreads in order to do it. They can coexist.

If you’re the type of person who checks reviews before buying a book, Book DNA is your kind of people. Bad reviews don’t always deter me from reading a book but good reviews are very compelling. And little blurbs from someone whose work I enjoy kick it up a notch. Happy reading!
