That Song

Discussing frivolous things right now seems wrong. Serious, important issues are at the forefront and I’m definitely taking part in those conversations. But sometimes, you need a mental break. Whether it’s turning off social media, or talking about the weather, or what have you. In that spirit, I want to share a little happy, silly, but satisfying occurence in my life! And it’s all about a song.

Flashback Friday

This week of flashbacks to my most-read posts comes to an end as I am no doubt searching for my slotted spoon and other necessities. And next week, I’m beginning a new blogging schedule and Miss Sugar moves to a new date. (HINT: there won’t be a fresh post on Monday. It’s all three-day weekends from now on, around here!)

Go Away & Get Paid

Until I started working for myself, I always worked for traditional companies with fat HR do-and-don’t binders and strict rules. Truth is, I kind of like rules. When parameters are set you know just how far you can push. The motto, “Beg forgiveness, don’t ask permission” works well in this environment, especially where creativity is involved.

Throwback Thursday – Audition Flashback

I don’t know Gerry Forbes well. We crossed paths professionally a couple of times and had lunch once, with another colleague. It was his brother, Marty, who got me out of Wingham by hiring me at CKFM (soon to become MIX 999, now Virgin) nearly – gulp – three decades ago. I don’t know Marty well, either. He left pretty soon after hiring me, but I chose not to take that personally!

Supportive Stars

Watching the mutual support between Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga reminds me of so many times in radio when that wasn’t the case for me. It’s clear that Cooper and Gaga have true affection for each other. The cold, hard fact is, they’re promoting a movie, but they’re doing it with grace and admiration. When you find that in broadcasting, it’s rare, as I’m sure my radio colleagues will testify.

Pulling Up Stakes

When we last left our intrepid broadcaster, she had purchased a home in Wallaceburg and put her London house up for sale. Her husband and cat have been clearing out and packing. (Husband more than cat.) We learned that the new home isn’t commuting distance to the current job. And now, with apologies to Paul Harvey, here’s…the rest…of the story.

Required Reading (If I May Say So Myself!)

In the past week, several instances have arisen that made me want to make in-your-face recommendations for my book about media and PR.  I resisted, of course, but the reasons why I wrote it keep piling up and people working in media keep sending me more examples. I don’t even have to try to prove that it’s needed! The proof comes to me.

Throwback Thursday: Not My Finest Hour (But I’m A Good One Nonetheless)

We read stories about people quitting work by doing something outlandish and think, OMG, I could NEVER. Around the time I quit MIX/CFRB there were much bigger and bolder exits from broadcasting. One used their airtime to lambaste their boss and company owner. Another tossed his headphones and walked out. One of my exits became a bit of a folk-tale and over the years it has come back to me with the details all wrong.  …
