Goodbye Hello

I cancelled my subscription to Hello Canada.  It’s a cheapie thanks to a deal through Rogers but that wasn’t the point.  As Bonnie Raitt sings, “life gets more precious when there’s less of it to waste.”  Because of Hello Canada’s affiliation with the original Hello in England, it relies on long and chatty articles about the royals nearly every week. Even though these fluffy pieces are accompanied by beautifully shot photos, I got one too many issues with William and Kate on the cover and something snapped.

And they don’t just fawn over the British royals. Pages and pages are devoted to the wealthy excesses of royalty from around the world. It’s just gross to witness so many gilded fireplaces and imported everything where money is no object.  It’s not even envy.  It’s disgust.

I’m thinking about subscribing to Real Simple magazine again. It is what the title suggests, really simple.  The editors root out everyday things that are modest but improve your life. Who makes the best vacuum for the money? How do you cook an artichoke? What’s a new use for a paperclip that you never thought of?  Simple and useful without a tiara, throne or castle in sight.

  1. Good for you Lisa, gotta start making a stand. I used to be a faithful purchaser of People magazine each week and the actual articles in the mag were getting less and less and ads were increasing; also noticed that the actual page count of entire magazine was getting less and less as well so I said to heck with it, I stopped buying it.

      1. And ERMAGERD! I just found out that Domino Magazine, my favourite of all time, is coming back as a quarterly. I mourned when they went out of business a few years ago. So, yay for me!

  2. Not a Hello Canada reader, but get what you’re saying. As for People, despite its (occasionally) good show content, I stopped my subscription cold when they put Paris Hilton on the cover after she got out of jail. That was it for me. Just think of all the Lohan/Kardashian/Cyrus stories I’ve missed. WAAAAAAAH!
