Mrs. Clean

I’m all about working smart, not hard, and that pertains to housework as well.

I’ve had cleaning people over the years but it’s increasingly difficult to schedule someone to come in without skipping my nap or any number of other complications. I try to think of it as good exercise when I do it myself.

A voice-over audition I recorded last week for a major cleaning product company noted that people’s household habits are changing. Instead of stopping everything to clean once a week, usually on a precious weekend, they’re doing things as they go. Wiping down a counter while talking on the phone. Dealing with junk mail immediately instead of letting it pile up. Rolling the cat hair off the couch while watching TV. Well, duh! I’ve been doing this for years!

NOTE TO MY BROTHER: When you hear a noise in the background while we’re on the phone and I say I’m not doing it, I’m lying! I’d rather multi-task while I talk than tell you the truth and for that, I apologize. But I think you already suspect this is the case.

If I didn’t behave this way I wouldn’t get nearly as much done. Although not a neat freak by any stretch, I do like things organized and I don’t shut down for the day with dishes in the sink. I don’t think it’s that uncommon to carry something around while I dust, knowing that I’ll eventually end up in the place where that thing belongs so I can put it back! This just seems like an efficient way to operate and I had to laugh at the thought that it was something “new”. Am I right?
