My brother sent these photos from Machu Picchu, Peru last night and they were so spectacular, I had to share them. His trip south will continue as soon as some bike parts arrive but for now, he’s touring the area and yesterday he went through the Incan ruins.
The walls were built without mortar and many of them have survived since the Incas started building them around 1430. Any that have collapsed are mostly due to the earth settling and not problems with workmanship!
In 2007 Machu Picchu was named one of the new 7 Wonders of the World. The World Monuments Fund also has it on its list of 100 endangered sites because of the impact of tourism and the environment.
