Goal Achieved!

I’m so proud of my colleagues at Free-FM for the way we handled our night at the 10th annual Rock the Park. We came, we saw, we rocked and I did get to do the one thing I wanted most – meet Tommy Shaw. But it was only because of sheer luck. The band did not submit to a meet-and-greet with us or our contest winners. If not for Toto keeping us waiting for 40 minutes, Mr. Shaw and I never would have had a moment.  …

RTP #10

I’m giddy at the thought of tonight. I’ve been very lucky to be able to meet so many of the musical heroes of my youth.  And one of them is coming to London to perform at the 10th annual Rock the Park and because Free-FM is presenting tonight’s entertainment, there’s a very good chance I’ll get to spend a little time fumbling for words in front of him!   …

Old Time Tune

I’ve always wanted one or two wax cylinders.  They’re what music was recorded on before records and I’m sure that in their day, people thought they were the be all and end all of audio technology.  …

Sunday/Monday (Family Day) Posting: Rival Sons

Gone are the days when I can sit or stand in a packed club and wait until 11 pm for the headliner to get on stage. So it was especially amazing that the Long Beach, California band, Rival Sons, visited Free-FM for an in-studio interview/acoustic performance on Saturday afternoon, the day of their sold-out show at Norma Jean’s.  …

Concerts Past

Some people can remember shows they’ve been to in incredible detail.  “Yeah it was a Tuesday and we were in the 11th row. The tickets were $17. They opened with Free Bird and did 2 encores.  I wore my striped shirt and a pair of Wranglers.”  …

A Bad Week for Disco Lovers

We just lost Donna Summer and now, Robin Gibb. If you grew up in the 70’s you know that The Bee Gees were cool to a lot of people and then they became uncool.  They never lost their cool for me.  I was a fan in the 1970’s, loved them through the 80’s and ever since. In 1991 I was the only music-related industry type in Canada to tell the magazine The Record that the Bee Gees’ High Civilization was on my top 10 albums of the year. …

Hot Stuff

Donna Summer kept her lung cancer a secret and that’s why it was such a jolt to find out the queen of 1970’s disco was dead at 63. …

Whitney Houston RIP

That awful, screechy I Will Always Love You aside, there was a time when Whitney Houston was the best (known) singer in the world.  As for I Will Always Love You I’ve always preferred the writer, Dolly Parton’s version.  But I digress.  …

10 Hands, One Guitar

Thank you to music guru Alan Cross for bringing this one to our attention.  The video has gone viral.  Walk Off The Earth is a band from Burlington, Ontario and look what they’ve done with a cover of an excellent Australian tune and just one guitar. …
