A Time of Change

Derek and I emceed a fundraising walk and run last Sunday: The Learning Disabilities Association of London’s Going the Distance 5K. The weather was perfect and even though the turnout wasn’t tremendous, an elf and his canine sidekick made it special.

Heykel Kader is a London fitness trainer and one of the most selfless men you’re ever going to meet. For several months he has dressed as a Christmas elf, dressed his dog as Mrs. Claus, and gone all over Old South and Wortley Village here in London doing Chores for Change. He has washed cars, trimmed hedges, bagged garbage, and fixed, painted or replaced just about everything imaginable. Every dime he collected went into a giant glass water bottle until it was overflowing with coins. On Sunday he strapped that bottle to his back. all 144 lbs. of it, and walked the 5K with it with Li’l T offering canine encouragement.

Heykel got a head start on the other runners and walkers. But not before spreading a little love among the participants!

A fitness instructor you say? Yes, that’s true, but he is also blind in one eye and was wearing elf boots with no support in them! While Chores for Change was happening, people definitely noticed the tall elf going around town with the tiny dressed-up dog at his side. He did it for fun and to help a cause he believes in.

In the end, he raised more than $2,000.  And when we thanked him from the stage he asked for the microphone and thanked everyone who donated, instead. He is uncommonly generous and just a little bit crazy! It’s a great combination. And it’s no wonder his training studio is called I Am Who I Am.

  1. That’s lovely. SO good to read about people who are about giving and doing instead of receiving or complaining. You’re a gem, too, Ms Brandt – you and Derek are out there making a difference and being a vibrant part of your community. You not only represent 98.1 well, but are making London a better place. Keep it up!
