My Left Foot Part Deux

So I told you a couple of weeks ago about my fall and showed you photos of the festive colours of my foot. But there’s more! After aching and staying swollen, one day, it took a turn. The ache turned into a stab and I knew something was wrong.

Long story short, X-rays showed some breaks in little bones but not the ankle itself, thank goodness. The recommendation: an air walker boot for 10 days. They don’t do plaster casts anymore, at least not for this type of injury. So after conducting thorough research, off to Shopper’s Home Health Care I went to try on a boot. It felt good, I must admit, but its $189.99 price tag gave me pause. It seemed like an insane amount of money for something I’d use less than two weeks. My health insurance might have given me a break but the clinic doctor didn’t give me a prescription so I was out of luck there. Did I mention that I have a family doctor I couldn’t get in to see in less than 10 days so I had to go to a clinic? But I digress.

Enter the ever practical and resourceful Betty T who suggested Kijiji. I have bought, sold and given away several items on the mighty Kijiji but I never thought of buying a medical device there. But why not? It’s not like it could give me foot SARS! And there are other folks out there who have shelled out a few hundred bucks for things like crutches and air walkers and stuff they only got to use short term.

Grey boot fastened with wide velcro straps looks like something a soldier of the future might wear

A very nice woman was offering a boot in my size for $30. I was skeptical (you’re always skeptical with Kijiji!) but I made an appointment to see her. Not only had it never been worn, it was virtually identical to the one at Shoppers. I couldn’t believe my luck. It has made a world of difference and I don’t feel like I was robbed for a bit of plastic, felt and air that I’ll only need for a short while.

My Big Show partner Blair wants to decorate it for Christmas. He thinks it should have a little bling and possibly some jingle bells. I’m not sure about that. I know myself and my accident-prone ways and I think that holding onto this boot in its present form is the best way to go.
