Harassment at Work

The province’s politicians got into a debate at the legislature about whether government is doing enough to stop harassment, specifically sexual harassment, in the workplace. Harassment in some form or another has been present at virtually every radio job I’ve had and it doesn’t matter whether or not the target is you, the fact that it is allowed to continue affects everyone on staff.  …

Less-Than-Friendly Competition

It’s possible that you’ve noticed a love/hate relationship between newspapers and radio stations.  At the papers, many believe radio newscasters merely rip off their work and put it on air. (There is basis in fact for this, which I’ll get to later.) At radio stations, there’s a belief that papers will go out of their way to overlook the whole medium and not name a specific station if they can help it.  This is also sometimes true.   …

Back to School

I’ve been surrounded by students lately! It’s intern-mania in London radio newsrooms right now. I’m impressed by the calibre of talent coming out of Fanshawe College. And now I’ve been offered the chance to help it grow.  …

How to Spot a Dinosaur

Dinosaurs – defined in this case as people who haven’t evolved with the times – make assumptions.  They assume everybody celebrates Christmas and don’t consider that they might be Jewish or another faith.  They assume everybody is straight.  They never think about whether a white person might be married to a black person or if someone might have adopted the children whose hands they’re holding.   …

If Only They Knew Me

I wasn’t feeling well when we left for Michigan on Saturday morning. I had a headache and a mildly queasy tummy.   After we stopped at the Port Huron Cracker Barrel, where I had a bland breakfast of plain oatmeal with raisins, the queasiness turned into full-blown nausea.  I spent an hour of the trip with my seat reclined, under a blanket.   If only I had taken that as a sign of what was to come! …

Faith Hill Isn’t Pretty Enough

It makes me very happy that the one conspiracy theory I completely subscribe to is being brought to light little by little.   Someone in the magazine world is exposing the ridiculous measures they go to, to “perfect” already beautiful women.  You don’t think Faith Hill needs touching up?  Well neither do I!   …

What Do You Make of This?

This city’s best known TV news anchor was recently arrested on assault charges.  I wrote a blog last week about not judging him until the facts are in.  But the issue today is whether or not his arrest qualifies as “news”.   There is no question that it does to every media property in this city except its largest daily newspaper and I and my media brethren feel a) the paper made an incomprehensible decision to not run the story and b) unfairly and now publicly judged by them because we aired the story.   …

Crazy From the Heat

Are you sick of hearing about how hot it has been? Yeah, well, we’re pretty sick of talking about it. But such extreme weather affects everybody and we don’t want anyone falling ill or saying they didn’t know it was coming. Here’s hoping that today there will be other issues on our radar. …
